Store Room (now the Gift Shop)

This fireplace has been rebuilt for safety. Note the pit marks oh the old handmade bricks which indicates that they have been rained upon before they were dry. The hearth is made of flagstone. The crane used here was found in the basement. Originally this was a shed-roofed room. The second floor and narrow-enclosed stairway' were added in 1859; The original floors are worm-eaten and worn from use. Note the "bull's eye glass" in the door. Ours is a Sturbridge Village, Mass. reproduction. This type of glass was usually used where it was not necessary to see out clearly. It is the product of crown glass which is blown and whirled into a disk by the glass-blower. The "bull's eye" is the center spot which was attached to the glass-blower's rod (pontil) .
