The inventory of July 1802 mentions a Cyder House, Cyder Mill and Press. There was an orchard which extended down Mountain Avenue as late as 1915. Therefore, an orchard has been started of specially grown varieties of fruit trees which were extant during the colonial period. These are from a limited supply of original fruit trees grown especially for this purpose. One apple variety planted here was grown in Thomas Jefferson's orchard. There are also quince, elderberry and pear trees growing in this area. Apples were essential to the early diet. They were a major food supply and a main source of drink (cider, metheglin, apple-jack and brandy). Apples also provided vinegar and apple molasses used for sweetening.
